Time is running out! SAP has communicated their intent for all SAP Commerce environments to be running in the cloud by 2023. Read on for advice from our experts about how to prepare for your SAP Commerce solution’s move to the cloud.

First things first: moving your environments to the cloud hinges on a solid plan and comprehensive preparation. Some of this preparation can be handled with the support of SAP, while other elements can be tackled internally.

Four steps toward a smooth migration

To be able to migrate to the cloud, you must be running SAP Commerce 1808 or higher. If you are still working on an older version, you’ll need to upgrade before you can start the migration.

If you are running version 1808 or higher, you can kick off your cloud preparation initiative by following these four steps.

  • Get a clear architectural overview. In most architectures, SAP Commerce is just one piece of the puzzle. It is important to know exactly what other environments your SAP Commerce solution is connected to. Once it has been migrated to the cloud, you’ll need to set up those connections again.
  • Make a regression test plan. When the new cloud environment is up, you should be able to test everything in a structured way.
  • Test the performance of your environments. It is important to know how your current s1 and p1 environments are performing before the migration is done. When you execute the same performance tests to assess your new cloud environments, you can define whether the new environments are more performant than the existing ones.
  • Clean your data. A significant part of the migration project is the migration of existing data. If there is less data to migrate, the project takes less time. This can be interesting for the migration of your production environment, as a faster data migration will also result in less downtime for your e-commerce website.

Request a migration assessment

All of the above will speed up your migration process and can be tackled by your internal team. To ensure an even smoother transition, you can also ask SAP to perform a migration assessment. The result of this migration assessment is a document created by SAP that contains a full overview of your solution readiness as well as a list of challenges you will face when migrating your environment. This will give you a good overview of code changes you need to take care of before starting your migration project.

As soon as your SAP Commerce cloud move preparation is done, you can start the migration project itself. Stay tuned for an upcoming blog post full of tips and tricks for a smooth SAP Commerce move.
