Innovation has always been the driving force behind economic and societal transformation. Since the start of the industrial revolution, we have witnessed multiple waves of innovation, each bringing significant change in how we live and work.

These waves can be categorised into six distinct cycles:

Innovation cycles

Each wave has brought both creative and destructive changes. For example, the introduction of steam power and railways in the second wave led to the decline of traditional industries such as horse-drawn carriage manufacturing. Similarly, the rise of digital networks in the fifth wave disrupted traditional media and retail industries, leading to the closure of many brick-and-mortar stores.

On the creative side, they have also spurred new industries and opportunities. The third wave’s focus on electricity and chemicals led to the development of new consumer products and the growth of the automotive industry, whilst the fifth wave’s digital revolution created new business models and platforms, such as e-commerce and social media.

The sixth innovation wave and the tipping point

We are currently in the sixth wave of innovation, driven by AI, IoT, robotics, and clean technology. This wave is rapidly approaching a tipping point, where the integration of these technologies will lead to unprecedented levels of automation and efficiency. Businesses that embrace these technologies will be well-positioned to thrive in this new era. But those who don’t, wont.

Growth in the use of GenAI

Generative AI (GenAI) is a key component of the sixth wave, enabling businesses to automate complex tasks and generate new content. There are a wide range of use cases for GenAI with organisations initially grabbing the low hanging fruit of customer service, knowledge, and content generation.

Delaware has been at the forefront of leveraging GenAI to drive business transformation. For instance, a multinational pharmaceutical corporation  implemented Delaware’s GenAI solution to automatically produce marketing materials to support a product launch. We also delivered a solution to a European financial institution that enabled the business to automatically create sanction reports.

Delaware is also one of the world’s leading implementation partners for Microsoft and SAP, and both vendors are introducing in-app GenAI solutions (Copilot for Microsoft and Joule for SAP).

SAP Joule is a GenAI copilot designed to enhance SAP applications by providing natural-language interactions and real-time insights. Joule supports process improvements within SAP solutions by automating routine tasks and providing actionable insights. For example, within SAP SuccessFactors, Joule can analyse employee turnover, create unbiased job descriptions, and formulate interview questions.

At the recent SAP Sapphire conference, SAP announced the integration of Joule with Microsoft M365 Copilot. This integration will allow employees to access information seamlessly from both SAP and Microsoft 365 applications. For example, a user can book a flight using SAP Concur and have Joule automatically block their calendar in Microsoft Outlook.

This integration supports the delivery of next-gen Collaborative ERP by enabling a step change in process automation. If you think about it, many business processes actually start and stop outside the traditional boundaries of ERP but often require data from multiple lines of business applications. By integrating Joule with M365 Copilot, businesses can genuinely achieve a step change in process automation and employee productivity, often referred to a hyper-automation.

Delaware’s Unique Position

Delaware is uniquely positioned as the only partner to have built a connector for Microsoft Copilot for Finance and SAP Public Cloud. This connector enables a truly collaborative Accounts Receivable process, allowing businesses to manage their financial processes seamlessly across SAP and Microsoft platforms, responding to customer enquiries, without leaving Microsoft Outlook.

Unique position

But of course, we can go further and provide truly interactive user experiences to create or query transactions from SAP. And guess what, this is just the start….

Conclusion

Conclusion

The integration of GenAI into collaborative ERP systems, powered by SAP and Microsoft’s GenAI platforms, represents a transformative opportunity for businesses. By automating processes, enhancing decision-making, and improving efficiency, companies can achieve a significant competitive advantage. Delaware’s pioneering work in developing a connector for Copilot for Finance and SAP Public Cloud further solidifies their position as a leader in this space, helping businesses unlock the full potential of their ERP systems.
